AVA’S EYES ROLLED BACK INTO HER HEAD AND SHE CRUMPLED TO THE FLOOR. Cormac caught her seconds before she hit the carpet. With a thought, he contained the pain he’d redirected to their mate-link and shut it down behind mental barriers once more, leaving him with what he assumed would resemble a migraine for a human.

He gathered Ava onto his lap, and she curled against him with a hoarse whimper. He could feel the dampness on her cheek against his chest where tears had fallen at the first shock of pain, before unconsciousness had sucked her under.

“I’m sorry, little wolf,” he murmured, stroking a hand over her hair as she stirred moments later.

“Is ... is that what they’d all feel?” she asked through shuddering breaths.

“Yes.” He brushed the tears from her cheek with his thumb.

“Oh God,” she whispered, horror coating her voice. “Is that what you feel?” Her hand, still shaking from the after-effects, rose and cupped his cheek. He stilled at her touch, unused to the display of affection. His wolf stirred. “How are you still conscious?”

“I’m the Pack Alpha,” he replied simply.

The hand on his cheek slid around to the back of his neck, and she pulled herself up until she could wrap her other arm around his shoulder. She buried her face into the crook of his neck, and Cormac felt her take a deep breath.

“Do they know?”

“Know?” he repeated. “Know what?”

“That you do this? Keep this from them?” Her voice was muffled, lips brushing against his throat.

“I’m the Alpha,” he said again. “They know I keep them safe. That I will do whatever it takes to ensure our Pack is protected.”

“But—”

“No, stop. I didn’t let you feel it so you could blame the Pack for not sharing the load. I showed you so you will understand why they can’t.”

“Does it happen every time one of your Pack is hurt?” Ava lifted her head. Cormac met her gaze, let her see the truth within his eyes. “How many?” she whispered.

“Enough to know it never gets easier.”

His cell phone rang, and Cormac turned his head toward it. He rose to his feet, and set Ava down, keeping one arm around her waist until he was sure she would stay upright. Ava leaned against him for a second, and then let her arms drop from his shoulders and stepped away so he could reach for his phone.

“Deacon?”

“We’ve found them.” Cormac knew immediately that the news was not good.

“Tell me.”

“Where we found Shaun and Gemma.” Deacon’s voice was clipped. “Noah didn’t make it. Roxie and Asher are …” his voice broke, and Cormac heard him suck in a steadying breath. “It’s not good. They’re alive … barely.” Another voice spoke in the background.

“Is that Shaun?”

“Yeah. Mac, he’s barely holding it together, and I can’t blame him. We need you and Chase out here, but I … we think it might be a trap, so we’re going to try and bring Roxie and Asher home.”

“If you need me there—”

“No. No, we can’t risk this not being an attempt to draw you out.
